About Port Credit

How Port Credit Became the Village on the Lake

Long before it was Port Credit, the mouth of the Credit River was home to the Mississaugas, an Anishinaabe people. By 1720, French traders had set up a post here, advancing goods on credit to be paid back in furs, which is how the river and the village got their names.

Port Credit grew from a harbour village into a town before joining Mississauga in 1974. Its original core west of the river is now a heritage conservation district, where you can still spot homes from the 1800s.

You can’t miss the lighthouse at the mouth of the river. The original guided ships into the harbour until 1918 and burned down in 1936. The local Lions Club built the replica you see today in 1991. Climb the deck for a free view of the river and harbour. It also houses a pumping station and the Port Credit BIA office (yes, we work in a lighthouse).

The Board of Directors, and the Committees they form, work to provide a supportive environment and positive atmosphere in Port Credit for business owners, residents and visitors, making the community an ideal place for shopping, dining, and entertainment, as well as financial and professional services.
